NEWSROOM

The editorial department, or "newsroom," writes and edits stories from the municipality, district and world and assigns them a place in the newspaper. National and international news stories are transmitted directly into the newspaper''s computer system by wire services such as The Canadian Press and Southam Newspapers. Freelance writers and columnists provide other sources of material. On a local level, our circulation area is covered by a team of reporters. They gather news by telephone and in person. Reporters are sometimes given assignments by one of the editors and are assigned a "beat". A beat is a specific area a reporter covers, such as municipal affairs, education, courts, environment or sports. If you become aware of something in our community which might make a good story or photo, please mention it to our managing editor or the city editor.
In gathering and presenting news, we must aim to be fair, accurate and complete. It is important that we avoid libel publishing a false statement which damages a person''s or organization''s reputation in the eyes of right-thinking people. In addition, there are legal rules governing the publication of items about "young offenders", child welfare and the courts. If legal action is threatened, it is important to bring it to the immediate attention of the managing editor or the city editor.
The editorial department personnel are assigned different areas of responsibility. We have personnel assigned as Managing Editor, City Editor, Lifestyles Editor, Wire Editor, News Editor, Weekend Editor, and Sports Editor.
The Sudbury Star is interested in the communities it serves and welcomes news about Northern Ontario''s people, their activities and interests.
Editors and reporters appreciate legitimate news stories and tips from our readers.
